USED CAR FINANCE

Used Car Finance UK — Any Car, Any Dealer

Found the perfect used car? Brilliant — let Whoosh help you finance it. Whether it is a nearly-new hatchback from a franchise showroom, a five-year-old SUV from an independent garage, or something you have spotted online, we can arrange finance for any used car from any reputable dealer in the UK.

We are an FCA-authorised credit broker based in Manchester, and we search a panel of lenders accessed through our finance partners to find competitive rates on used car finance. No restrictions on make, model, or dealer — the choice is entirely yours.

Most cars bought in the UK today are purchased on finance rather than with cash, and used cars are no exception. In fact, used car finance is one of the most common types of car finance in the country because it offers the best balance of value, choice, and affordability. A used car that is two or three years old has already taken the biggest depreciation hit, which means you get more car for your money compared to buying new.

How Used Car Finance Works

Used car finance works the same way as any other car finance: you borrow a set amount and pay it back in monthly instalments over an agreed term, typically between 2 and 5 years. Interest is charged on top of the amount you borrow, and the total cost depends on the APR you are offered, the term length, and whether you provide a deposit.

The two most common types of used car finance are:

Hire Purchase (HP)

You borrow the full price of the car (minus any deposit) and pay it back in fixed monthly instalments. Once you make the final payment, you own the car outright. There are no mileage limits, no balloon payment, and no condition requirements at the end. HP is the most popular choice for used car buyers because it is simple, predictable, and means you own the car when you are done.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

Your monthly payments only cover the difference between the car's current price and its predicted future value (the GMFV). This means lower monthly payments than HP, but at the end of the agreement you face a choice: pay a large final balloon payment to keep the car, hand it back, or use any equity as a deposit on your next vehicle. PCP comes with mileage limits and condition requirements that you must stick to throughout the agreement.

What Cars Can I Finance?

With Whoosh, you can finance almost any used car as long as it meets basic lender requirements. These vary slightly between lenders, but the general criteria are:

  • Age

The car should typically be no older than 10-12 years at the end of the finance agreement. So if you take out a 5-year HP deal, the car would need to be no more than about 5-7 years old when you buy it.

  • Mileage

Most lenders prefer cars under 100,000 miles at the point of purchase. Some specialist lenders are flexible, but higher-mileage vehicles can limit your options.

  • Dealer type

The car must be purchased from a reputable, FCA-compliant dealer — franchise, independent, or online. Lenders do not fund private sales because of the consumer protection risks involved.

  • Minimum value

Most lenders set a minimum borrowing amount of around £3,000-£4,000. The car will typically need to be valued at that amount or above.

Beyond these basics, you have complete freedom. Any make, any model, any dealer in the UK. Whether it is a Volkswagen Golf from a dealer in Manchester, a BMW 1 Series from an online retailer, or a Nissan Qashqai from a franchise showroom in Birmingham — if it meets the criteria above, we can arrange the finance.

Why Use a Broker for Used Car Finance?

When you find a car at a dealer, they will almost always offer to arrange finance for you. This is convenient, but it has significant limitations. Here is why using a broker like Whoosh is often the smarter move:

  • More options, one application

Dealers typically offer finance from just one or two lenders. We search a panel of lenders accessed through our finance partners with a single application — giving you access to more products and often a better rate.

  • Fewer credit searches

Applying to multiple lenders individually means multiple hard searches on your credit file, which can damage your score. With Whoosh, our initial eligibility check uses a soft search, and you only get a hard search if you choose to proceed.

  • We work for you, not the dealer

Dealers earn commission on finance sales — often from the lender that pays them the highest commission. As a broker, we also earn commission, but we are not trying to sell you a car. Our only job is to find the right finance deal for your situation.

  • We can often beat dealer rates

Because we access a wider panel, we frequently find rates that are more competitive than what the dealer offers — particularly for applicants with good credit.

  • Get approved first, then choose your car

With a broker, you can secure finance before you start shopping. You already know your budget, putting you in a stronger position at the dealer — effectively a cash buyer from their perspective.

Used Car Finance with Bad Credit

Bad credit does not have to stop you from financing a used car. We work with specialist lenders available through our finance partners who consider applicants with CCJs, defaults, missed payments, IVAs, and low credit scores.

Used car finance is actually one of the more accessible types of credit for people with poor credit histories. The car itself acts as security for the loan, which reduces the lender's risk. And because used cars are typically lower in value than new cars, the amounts involved are smaller — which makes lenders more comfortable.

The interest rate will be higher than for someone with excellent credit, and your finance type options may be more limited (HP is more widely available than PCP for bad credit applicants). But getting approved for a used car is often very achievable, even with a complicated credit history.

Risks of Used Car Finance

FCA Consumer Duty

Before committing to used car finance, make sure you understand these risks:

  • Depreciation and negative equity

Used cars continue to lose value over time. If you finance a car with a small or no deposit, you could find yourself in negative equity during the early part of the agreement — meaning you owe more than the car is worth. Choosing a car that holds its value well and putting down a deposit both reduce this risk.

  • Total cost of finance

Financing a car costs more than paying cash because of interest charges. Over a typical 4-5 year agreement, the total cost of credit can add several thousand pounds to the price of the car. Always check the total amount payable — not just the monthly payment.

  • Repossession risk

If you miss payments, the lender may repossess the vehicle. This will result in a default on your credit file, affecting your ability to borrow for years. If you are struggling, contact the lender immediately.

  • Mileage and condition charges (PCP only)

If you choose PCP, exceeding the agreed annual mileage or returning the car in poor condition will result in additional charges — potentially hundreds or thousands of pounds. If you drive high mileage, HP may be the safer choice.

  • Mechanical costs on older cars

Used cars — particularly those outside of manufacturer warranty — can have unexpected repair costs. Factor in a budget for maintenance alongside your monthly finance payment.

Tips for Getting the Best Used Car Finance Deal

  • Check your credit report before applying

Know where you stand. Fix any errors before you apply. Improving your credit score.

  • Save a deposit if you can

Even £500 can reduce your monthly payment, lower the total cost, and improve your chances of approval. No deposit car finance.

  • Choose the right term length

A longer term means lower monthly payments but a higher total cost. A shorter term costs less overall but means higher monthly outgoings. Find the balance that works for your budget.

  • Compare APR, not just monthly payments

A deal with a lower monthly payment but a longer term and higher APR will cost you more in total. Always look at the total amount payable.

  • Get your finance approved first

Apply with Whoosh before you start car shopping. Knowing your budget and rate in advance gives you negotiating power at the dealer.

  • Research the car's value

Use guides like Auto Trader's valuation tool to check whether the car is fairly priced. Overpaying for the car means overpaying on your finance.
